János Kádár, the Communist leader who ruled Hungary for 32 years after the Soviet attack on the nation in 1956, asked to meet with a priest before he died, an ex-Communist prime minister has revealed. Cardinal József Mindszenty was confined to the US embassy in Budapest for much of Kádár's reign.
"This [Kádár's request] struck all of us as a complete surprise," former Prime Minister Miklós Németh told Reuters. "I don't know whether Kádár atoned to him or what he told him, you can't ask a priest about such things. There is no way to find out now-- everybody has died since."
