Prime Minister Stephen Harper supports proposed reforms that would permit a Catholic to become king or queen of the United Kingdom, spokesman Andrew MacDougall said. The monarch of the United Kingdom is Canada's head of state.

In 2008, Autumn Kelly, a Canadian Catholic, renounced her faith and converted to Anglicanism when she married Peter Phillips, Queen Elizabeth's grandson. By doing so, she allowed him to remain eleventh in the line of succession.
