The papal representative supervising a reform of the Legionaries of Christ has indicated that many of the rules governing the conduct of members will be eliminated.
Cardinal Velasio De Paolis said that most of the rules—which governed the details of the way Legionaries dressed, ate, and contacted their relatives—have no standing in canon law. Although members of the order were told that the rules had Vatican approval, the Holy See had only given its recognition to a much smaller, less restrictive set of statutes.
