January 18, 2012 Writing in L'Osservatore Romano, Cardinal Kurt Koch, president of the Pontifical Council for Promoting Christian Unity, discusses some of the highlights of Pope Benedict's thought on ecumenism.
"With his ecumenical commitment, Pope Benedict XVI witnesses in an exemplary way to what the ecumenical responsibility of every bishop in the Catholic Church consists of, described by the Code of Canon Law," Cardinal Koch observed.
The prelate noted that Pope Benedict has placed a priority on ecumenism since the beginning of his papacy. "With full awareness, therefore, at the beginning of his ministry in the Church of Rome which Peter bathed in his blood, Peter's current Successor takes on as his primary task the duty to work tirelessly to rebuild the full and visible unity of all Christ's followers," the Pontiff preached in his first message as Pope.
