Swiss bishop: SSPX priests cannot celebrate Mass in diocesan chapels

CWN - February 04, 2013

The Bishop of Lausanne, Switzerland, has announced that priests of the Society of St. Pius X (SSPX) do not have permission to celebrate Mass in chapels within his diocese.

Bishop Charles Morerod—who has considerable influence at the Vatican, as secretary of the International Theological Commission and a member of the Vatican commission engaged in doctrinal discussions with the SSPX—made his announcement in the context of a policy statement on the use of diocesan churches and chapels by ministers of other faiths.

Pointing out that priests of the SSPX are suspended from public ministry, Bishop Morerod said: "As long as the Society does not have a canonical status in the Church, its ministers do not exercise legitimate ministries in the Church."
