Planned Parenthood clinics in Iowa have popularized a new practice known as "telemed abortion," in which women are given abortifacient drugs without every meeting a doctor face-to-face.
In the "telemed" process, a clinic staff member performs a sonogram on the pregnant woman, and the abortionist—examining the result from his own office—prescribes the drug. The woman never sees the image of her own unborn child.
The "telemed abortion" procedure cuts costs for the clinics and the abortionists. Planned Parenthood expects to offer the option at several more facilities in Iowa.
